Dances and songs from Zvečan

There is justification for our firm belief that it is still not too late to take steps to save this immeasurable treasure of ours. If one goes to regions where old forms of dance are well preserved, in the aim of collecting and studying our folk dances, one will have the opportunity to see at every step how strong the connection is between these remnants of the past and modern man.

Thanks to the strength of that echo from past times, we can still come across old folk dances today. We learned about the old local dances and songs in this area where they are still preserved from the married couple Zlata and Ratomir Vukašinović, who selflessly wished to pass on their knowledge and skills in dancing and singing in Zvečan and its surroundings.

It was not difficult for me to visit all the localities in this area together with Dražen Jevtić and Dušica Radosavljević, as I had with me a great enthusiast, a faithful devotee and an excellent guardian of heritage, a long-time player of KUD 'Boro and Ramiz' Kosovska Mitrovica and KUD 'Zvečan' Miljković Slaviša Cakić. Mile Nedeljković from the new settlement - Zvečan, a seventy-year-old, showed enthusiasm for singing and dancing. It's no wonder that the family transmission of tradition at Nedeljković's was important for preserving the song and dance, as his relative Siniša Nedeljković-Frenki had very successfully led KUD 'Zvečan' until his death. It was not simple to select melodies from this locality. The dances and songs I chose for this choreography are: 1. 'Ljiljan Oro Ljiljan goro’, 2. Kozarice, 3. Sviri Pero, 4. Ispkela sam pečenicu, 5. U kavače gusto bajče, 6. Staro Korićko kolo. What to say, the dances themselves are temperamental in their own way and are performed in two-four time, purely of Serbian type. The dances are mixed, moving in a closed and open circle. The melodies in which a cheerful color predominates and sound as if they are from central Serbia are: 'Ispkela sam pečenicu' (I Baked a Roast), 'Sviri Pero' (Pero Plays), 'Staro Korićko kolo' (Old Koriljsko Dance). The musical accompaniment of these melodies is simple and has a pure folk character.
